The International Biennale of Graphic Design in Brno, founded in 1963, is one of the longest running events of its kind in the world. The Biennale is held every other year in Brno, which is the second largest city in the Czech Republic – right in the heart of Europe. The main organizers are the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the Moravian Gallery in Brno, in the buildings of which the Biennale takes place. The event covers two regular themes that are alternated with each other – one includes posters, corporate identity and advertising graphics, while the other deals with the graphic design and type in books, magazines, newspapers and new media. Although many renowned artists participate, the Biennale is also open to young fledgling designers. The only priority is the quality of work. The volume of submissions is usually about 5,000 works by several hundred designers, form virtually every continent. From these, the selection committee chooses items for exhibition. All of the selected entries are displayed and the International Jury then make the various awards of Grand Prix, prize for the best work in each category, as well as other prizes. The main exhibition is accompanied with a number of associated events – in particular the symposium, dealing with major contemporary issues in graphic design. During the jubilee 20th Brno Biennale 2002 the traditional symposium will be replaced by the Icograda International Conference on Identity / Integrity, see www.brno2002.

A colour catalogue in which each of the exhibiting artists has one page with their basic data and a photograph of their best exhibit, supports every Biennale. Every Biennale presents the most interesting ideas produced during the previous four years. Projects, opinions and trends in graphic design meet here from all four corners of the globe, where new directions for its future development are formed. The event is endorsed by ICOGRADA (International Council of Graphic Design Associations).
